For Good: A Lens

IMG_6756“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Romans 8:28

I’ve questioned this Bible verse many times.

I wondered about it when my head was shaved for brain surgery.

As a gun was held up to me in Mexico City.

When a tornado destroyed every personal touchstone in my hometown, including my family home.

While I fought to live through a septic infection of my colon.

As I have lost and regained the ability to walk several times over 10 years.

In pain.

In sickness.

In distress.

In fear.

Sometimes everyday I’ve wondered.

And I’ve rejoiced as I’ve seen it proven true time and time again as each of the above did indeed work “for good” in my life….

And then, maybe like you, I have forgotten, only to find myself struggling to find the “why” behind the disappointments and negativity that are part of this life we live.

So, is there a secret to living each moment of our lives focused on the good that God does for us?

Have I missed something?

I believe I have.

This verse can serve, not just as a reminder after an event happens that “all things work together for good,” but as a daily lens through which to view each moment of life.

What would happen if we chose to believe that our past, present, and our future was secure “for good” in the hands of the One who created us? That all things were working together to create in us a deeper knowledge and a stronger relationship with Him?

I believe we would change. I believe we could choose to see each day through a lens of good. Of purpose.

Perhaps not all the bad would disappear. Maybe our troubles would linger, our fears still surround us in ever-present, concrete, visible form.

But, is it possible that instead of being overwhelmed, we could see them through His lens? That when sickness seen through His eyes may be a gift beyond value? That financial difficulty seen through the lens of “for good” may be a hidden blessing? That broken relationships, when seen clearly with the glasses of “for good”, could be the healing for an emotional struggle we’ve been cornered by for decades?

Yes.

I’m starting this devotional blog “For Good”  not to gloss over trouble, but to reframe it within and through his Word. I’m looking for Bible characters who have faced the choices we face today, scouring the Psalms for a balm of healing, searching for promises that will secure my soul to the Anchor.

As I write weekly, maybe more, I hope you’ll come back. I hope you’ll be encouraged to see more of life through the lens of good, built on the foundation of His Word, and be reminded of how beautifully woven together our lives are through intricate, divine design.

His Design.

For all things do indeed work for our good. If only we will look.

Katy
